Adopting a Senior Dachshund: 5 Reasons It Might Be the Right Dog for You

Older dogs are often overlooked in shelters. They do not have puppy eyes, and they have fewer years ahead of them. But they still want what every dachshund wants: warmth, a soft place to sleep and someone to follow from room to room. Here is why a senior dachshund might be one of the best decisions you ever make.

1. What you see is what you get

A puppy is a surprise: how big will he get, how much energy, how much opinion? A senior dachshund comes with his size, his personality and his habits already in place. If you prefer short, slow walks, you can find a dog who feels the same. If you love long hikes, you can find that dog too.

2. The chewing phase is behind him

Puppies chew cables, shoes and cushions as their teeth come in and their energy has nowhere to go. A grown dachshund has usually left all that behind. Your shoes, your furniture and your charging cables are far safer, and you are far less likely to come downstairs to a surprise.

3. Calmer, but not a couch potato

It is a myth that older dogs are always slow and tired. Many senior dachshunds stay playful and curious for years, as long as they get gentle regular exercise, a balanced diet and routine vet checks. Think shorter, more relaxed walks and a lot of quality time on the sofa.

4. Less training, but still some

Adopting an adult dog usually means less intensive training than raising a puppy. You are still strangers at the beginning, though, so give both of you time to settle in, and be patient in the first weeks. Trust builds quickly with a dog who finally has a home.

5. A wonderful last chapter

For a dog in a shelter, a warm home and a person of his own can change everything. You give him a second chance, and he gives you daily proof that love has no age limit. We know a little about this at home: Carlos and Diego are 15, brothers, still the heart of everything we do and still test every coat we make.

Good to know before you adopt

  • Ask the shelter or rescue about the dog's health history, and plan for regular vet visits.
  • Dachshunds of any age need their backs protected: no jumping off furniture, and ramps or steps where useful.
  • Older dogs feel the cold sooner. A soft bed or cuddlesack and a well-fitting coat make winter walks much more comfortable (see our 7 reasons your dachshund needs a coat).
  • Not sure which size to choose? Have a look at our size guide, or tell us your dachshund's type and weight via chat or email and we'll help you choose.

And isn't a dachshund who is simply happy to be home just a little bit special?
